Session 19 - Using Gamification in Records Management Training
University Archives (UA) at UNC Charlotte is tasked with coordinating records management duties across campus, but all employees are legally responsible for the public records they create. We ask each department to designate a person to be responsible for facilitating the retention and disposition of their office's records and to serve as the main point of contact with UA. In Summer 2021, in an attempt to level-up our training initiatives, UA added gamification to its outreach efforts toward records liaisons. A simple game-based training offered both intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation, while also providing differentiated instruction. This approach resulted in two types of discovery: Participating liaisons were identified, and learners recognized their own knowledge gaps.
Session participants will see how easy it is to craft a game with a free online tool and Google Sheets. Bring a device and your own quiz questions with answers and let the gamification begin! They will also briefly learn about gamification and see how it was implemented in records management training. They will have an opportunity to practice with a free online tool and share with other participants.
